Understanding Head & Neck Cancer
Head & Neck Cancer : Overview
The most common type of cancer of the head
and neck is squamous cell carcinoma, which
arises in the cells that line the inside of the nose,
mouth and throat.
In general, patients with early-stage head and
neck cancers (particularly those limited to the
site of origin) are treated with either radiation
therapy or surgery. Patients who have more
extensive cancers are treated with a combination
of surgery and radiation, or with radiation
therapy and chemotherapy.
We offer Intensity Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT) for our head and neck
patients. With this technique we are able to
deliver high conformed doses of radiation therapy
and spare normal tissues in the area that do not
need treatment such as salivary glands. This
cutting edge technology is now used not only in
academic centers but also in community clinics.
